“Grandma" Betsy Orrock Campfire Circle Project
Betsy was raised in Spotsylvania and 4-H played a HUGE part of her life – she worked year round in the local extension office and served as a 4-H Camp adult volunteer. Her 3 kids camped here and continued on as summer staffers for several years. Betsy and her children were in the 4-H Fashion Revue and Share-the-Fun shows, as well as being members of the Teen Club in Spotsylvania. Betsy, a special education teacher, was told she had ovarian cancer in 1997. She fought bravely for almost 4 years and had a positive outlook and continued to live life to the fullest and volunteer at camp. Unfortunately she lost her battle in 2000.
One of Betsy's favorite things at camp was the campfire. The Spotsylvania County 4-H clubs thought it would be a great project to build a new circle in her honor. Our old campfire circle was too small to comfortably hold 320 campers and after 15 years of heavy use, it was deteriorating and posing a safety threat. The new circle, constructed with composite decking boards, holds approximatly 500 people, enabling everyone to enjoy and experience campfire! You can support this project by puchasing a walkway brick engraved with your message for $35.00, a larger engraved campfire circle brick for $150.00, or sponsor the "Great Bear" bench with a plaque for $1,000.00.
